The Moody College does not require our students to complete a minor, but you may elect to do so if you wish. The process that you must complete to declare the minor will vary depending on your catalog.
Students following the 2016-2018 catalog
Students under the 2016-2018 catalog who wish to pursue a minor or a certificate should search the University's minor/certificate inventory to see what minors and certificates are offered. From this inventory, you can access each minor or certificate's webpage to the view the requirements of that program. You should read each program's application instructions and eligibility criteria carefully before completing the application.
The Moody College recommends Moody students who are considering a minor meet with their academic advisor to discuss their options and what impact it might have on their major coursework.
When the department offering the minor or certificate approves a student, the student will receive a SAN indicating that there are “additional steps.” For Moody minors and certificates, this is not true. The process is complete. Moody will contact the student if there are further requirements.
Students following a catalog prior to 2016-2018
Students interested in declaring/changing a minor for a Communication major should submit an online minor application.
In order to be eligible to declare a minor, you must:
- Be a currently enrolled student in the Moody College
- Be completing all degree requirements under the 2010-2012 catalog but not later than the 2014-2016 catalog
- Have completed 60 hours of coursework
Policies regarding minors (prior to 2016-2018)
- A minor is optional in the Moody College of Communication; therefore, a minor is not required to complete a bachelor's degree in the Moody College of Communication. However, if you choose to complete a minor, you must complete it according to the requirements, policies, and procedures established by The University and the Moody College of Communication.
- Students should meet with their assigned academic advisor to confirm their intended minor is a good combination for their degree.
- Students may complete only one minor per Communication major.
- Minor coursework must be completed in a single field outside of the Moody College of Communication
- A minor consists of at least fifteen semester hours, including at least nine hours of upper-division coursework. Nine of the fifteen hours must be completed in-residence.
- A course to be counted toward the minor may not be taken on the pass/fail basis, unless the course is offered only on that basis.
- Only one course counted toward the core curriculum, prescribed work, and major requirements for the student's degree may also be counted toward the minor.
- If the minor is in a foreign language other than that used to fulfill the foreign language requirement, the fifteen hours may be lower-division but must include at least nine hours beyond course 507 or the equivalent.
- The Moody College of Communication allows the student to minor in any field outside the college in which the University offers a major. However, prerequisites and other enrollment restrictions may prevent the student from pursuing a minor in some fields. Before planning to use specific courses to make up the minor, the student should consult the department that offers those courses. Declaring a minor does not guarantee or grant students access to classes or seats in minor department courses.
- Hours completed toward a minor will still count as hours attempted. Minor hours may make a student ineligible for the tuition rebate application, VA certification, or B on Time Loans if they attempt hours beyond 120 total hours. Students should see their academic advisor to confirm their continued eligibility for these programs. Program limits are not waived to accommodate minor hours.
- If you are not meeting degree requirements due to a minor at the time of graduation certification, your minor will automatically be dropped in order to allow for degree certification.
Frequently Asked Questions about Minors (prior to 2016-2018)
I want to declare a minor. What should I do?
You should submit an online minor application if you meet the minor declaration requirements.
Am I eligible to declare a minor?
Only students completing degree requirements under the 2010-2012 catalog or a later catalog are eligible to declare a minor. If you are under an older catalog but wish to declare a minor, you should meet with your academic advisor to determine if it's in your best interest to switch to a catalog that allows declaration of a minor. If you switch to a newer catalog, you will be required to complete ALL degree requirements under that catalog even if some courses were not required under your previous catalog or degree requirements have been added or changed.
How do I change/drop my minor?
You should submit another online minor application which allows you to change or delete you minor.
I am a double major in Communication. Can I complete one minor for my CMS major and a different minor for my ADV major?
Yes. Students may complete (and officially declare) one minor per Communication major.
If I can't complete my minor and I forget to drop it, will I still be able to graduate?
If you are not meeting degree requirements due to a minor, your minor will automatically be dropped in order to allow for degree certification.
If I declare a minor, will I gain access to courses in that field?

Before planning to use specific courses to make up the minor, the student should consult the department that offers those courses. Declaring a minor in a restricted field does not guarantee or grant access to those courses.
I'm completing the Business Foundations Program (BFP) certificate. Can I declare Business as my minor?
No. A minor requires completion of fifteen hours in a single field of study. Since the BFP coursework is distributed across the fields of Accounting, Management Information Systems, Management, Marketing, Legal Environment of Business, International Business and Finance, the BFP does not qualify as a minor.
I am completing a course that is not in my minor department, but it is listed as a "meets with" (or "same as") course for a course that is my minor department. Will this count toward my minor?
Yes. A "Meets with" (or "same as") course will count toward a minor if it is cross-listed with the official single field of the minor and as long as it is not cross-listed with a Communication course.
I used Spanish for my foreign language proficiency requirement; can I complete a minor in Spanish?
Yes. Only one course may be counted toward the foreign language proficiency requirement and toward the minor, though. Students completing SPN611D for their foreign language proficiency requirement would still be required to complete 9 hours of upper-division Spanish to meet the minor requirement. Students completing SPN312L out of residence for their foreign language proficiency requirement would need to complete 12 hours of upper-division Spanish coursework to meet the minor requirement as there are no additional lower-division Spanish courses offered at UT that would count. Students completing additional lower-division coursework through credit-by-exam or transfer credit should check with their advisor as not all possible scenarios can be included in an FAQ. Note that minor residency hours would still be enforced.
I am completing a study abroad program in Spain earning SPN credit; can I use these hours toward my Spanish minor?
Since the minor requires that at least 9 of the 15 hours must be completed in-residence, it will depend on the type of program in which you participate. Any UT Affiliated program will be allowed to count toward the minor as long as the other requirements are met. Unaffiliated study abroad program coursework can count as long as you meet the minor residency requirement.
I used Spanish as my foreign language proficiency requirement, but I want to complete a minor with another foreign language. Can I do that?
Yes and you may be able to use additional lower division hours toward the minor. If the minor is in a foreign language other than that used to fulfill the foreign language requirement, the fifteen hours may be lower-division but must include at least nine hours beyond course 507 or the equivalent. For example, if a student used Spanish for their foreign language proficiency but still wanted to take Italian for their minor, they could count ITL506, ITL507, ITL612, and ITL328 for the minor. Note that minor residency hours would still be enforced.
Will my minor be printed on my transcript and/or diploma?
No. Minors are not printed on the transcript or the diploma. If you complete a minor, you may add it to your resume.
Students may consider complementing their degree with a concentration (or also often called an emphasis) in a specific area of study outside of your major. This is not an official program and therefore is not specifically structured by departments or documented on a transcript or diploma. Students will not receive a certificate for a concentration. To claim a concentration on your resume, students must complete 12 hours of coursework in one area of study with at least 6 hours of the coursework at the upper-division level.
Students may consider special certificate programs such as the Business Foundations Program, the Latino Media Studies Program, and the Elements of Computing Program. Certificate programs typically require specific coursework as designed by the department.
