Language Requirement

Students following the 2022-2024 catalog must satisfy a language and culture requirement in one of the following ways: (a) Demonstrating intermediate-level proficiency in a single language other than English; (b) Demonstrating beginning-level proficiency in a language other than English and taking one approved culture course in a culture that is relevant to the language.

Students following the 2018-2020 or 2020-2022 catalog must satisfy a language and culture requirement in one of the following ways: (a) Demonstrating intermediate proficiency in a single language other than English; (b) Taking two consecutive courses in one language and one approved culture course in a culture that is relevant to the language.

Students following the 2016-2018 catalog, or an earlier catalog must demonstrate intermediate proficiency in a single language other than English.

  • Some departments may offer multiple sequences for the same language, including sequences specific for native speakers. Speak to an advisor to discuss appropriate coursework and/or placement test options.
  • Some languages start only in the fall; students must plan schedules accordingly.
    • Example: DAN 604 is only taught in fall semesters
  • Sequences may vary if taken in transfer or through Study Abroad. Speak with an advisor before taking courses off campus.
    • Common example of sequence numbering in transfer: 
      • SPN 406, 407 (beginning proficiency), 312K, and 312L (intermediate proficiency)
  • To achieve intermediate proficiency at another school or university, a student would take the UT equivalents of 306 or 406 or 506, 307 or 407 or 507, 312K and 312L. (except French)
