Road Chill

Road Chill

By Carrie Barron

Recently, I asked a 60 something grandmother, great grandmother and guardian to two young children what gave her a sense of meaning or satisfaction in life. She shared that it was tending to the elderly and counseling youth. Mrs. Y. drives neighbors to the doctor or store and provides companionship when needed. She counsels youth in her community.  After commenting on her altruistic ways, I asked what Mrs. Y made her laugh. She turned her head slightly, her eyes twinkled, a smile crept up to her face and she chuckled. It seems that armed with personally curated jazz, blues and sixties CDs, she hits the highway, heads for the country and turns up the volume. Sometimes the radio plays her favorites but the CDs are a guarantee just in case. She sings.

So often we read about traffic conundrums. This Huffington Post piece, describes 9 ways in which driving can de-stress. In the mind, if we pair car with music, culture, country, friend and podcast –positives– perhaps the next jam will be just a little less jarring.  http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/10/22/how-driving-can-help-you-relax_n_5918894.html?slideshow=true#gallery/372374/0
