2026 Jenkins Medal for Excellence in Sportswriting

Finalists for Best Sportswriting; New Awards for Student Sportswriting and Best Book

has announced the 12 pieces nominated for Best Sportswriting of the year for the tenth iteration of the Dan Jenkins Medal for Excellence in Sportswriting. The awards are presented annually in honor of the legendary Texas sportswriter and best-selling author, who defined the sportswriter’s craft for a generation.

Since 2017, the Jenkins Medal has been awarded in two categories:

  • The Dan Jenkins Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Sportswriting
  • The Dan Jenkins Medal for Best Sportswriting

This year, CSCM is offering an award in two additional categories:

  • The Dan Jenkins Medal for Student Sportswriting
  • The Dan Jenkins Medal for Best Book

The Student Sportswriting, Best Sportswriting and Best Book awards cite accomplishment for a single piece published in the previous calendar year (2025). All awards are accompanied by a cash prize.

This is the tenth iteration of the Dan Jenkins Medal for Excellence in Sportswriting. The awards are named annually by a jury of working sports journalists in honor of the legendary Texas sportswriter and best-selling author, who defined the sportswriter’s craft for a generation.

2026 Deford Lecture

Seth Wickersham spoke in the Moody College auditorium, delivering the Deford Lecture (sponsored by the McGarr Symposium on Sports and Society) on March 31. He is a senior writer at ESPN whose primary focus is long form enterprise and investigative work on the National Football League. His stories have appeared across ESPN platforms.

In more than two decades at ESPN, Wickersham has profiled the likes of Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Bill Belichick, John Elway, Sean McVay, Andrew Luck, Odell Beckham, Jr., Bill Walsh, Jim Harbaugh, Alex Honnold, Gregg Popovich and Y.A. Tittle, among others. Along with senior writer Don Van Natta, Wickersham has written critically acclaimed investigations on the NFL’s handling of the Spygate and Deflategate cheating controversies, the Rams and Raiders franchise relocations, the behind-closed-doors meetings on the inequality protests, the efforts by Jerry Jones to block Roger Goodell’s contract extension, the complicated tenure of NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith, the efforts of Donald Trump to interfere with Senator Arlen Specter’s Spygate inquiry, and of Dan Snyder’s attempts to avoid being removed as owner of the Washington Commanders. A 2022 story about Snyder by Wickersham, Van Natta, and Tisha Thompson is widely credited with triggering the push for him to sell the franchise.

2026 McGarr Symposium

Tom Ricketts, Executive Chairman of the Chicago Cubs, spoke to a UT-Austin campus audience for the 2026 McGarr Symposium on Sports and Society. In addition to his work with the Cubs, he is also the Founder and Chairman of fintech securities underwriting and distribution firm InspereX.

In 2009, Tom led his family’s bid for the Chicago Cubs. In 2016, the organization won its first World Series title in 108 years, snapping the longest championship drought in North American major sports history. The Cubs were named Organization of the year by Baseball America and Tom was named Sports Business Journal Executive of the Year in 2017.

2026 Politics in Sports Media Report

CSCM has released the fifth annual “Politics in Sports Media” report. In 2025, sports and politics intersected in many forms and contexts. Our survey and content analysis provide quantitative data and our critical essays reveal the underlying dynamics that reflect struggles over resources and power.

To compile the report, researchers from the Center for Sports Communication & Media surveyed over 500 sports fans about how they define and react to political content in sports and how they perceive leading sports media brands and their mix of sports and political content. The report also includes a content analysis of ESPN and Yahoo websites that reveal which political topics are most frequently featured in mainstream sports media. The report concludes with six case studies evaluating news stories from 2025 that featured politics and sports.
