Postdoctoral Scholar in Health Communication

Location: Austin, TX

The Center for Health Communication (CHC) at the University of Texas at Austin is seeking applicants to fill a Postdoctoral Scholar position, beginning June 2017.

Description of Duties

The position primarily involves designing, implementing, and evaluating communication skills training for health profession students at UT Austin. The postdoc will teach and conduct research on topics including but not limited to health/healthcare communication, interpersonal/interprofessional communication, and public speaking/writing for healthcare professionals. This appointment will be located in the CHC and the hire will report to and be mentored by the Associate Director for Interdisciplinary Instruction of the CHC. The postdoc will work directly with the highly-ranked College of Pharmacy and innovative new Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin.

In addition to teaching formal organized university courses, the person in this role will be expected to assist the CHC leadership in creating and delivering content for communication skills training and continuing education programs both at and beyond UT Austin. Thus, a successful applicant will be able to contribute to advancing the mission of the CHC in the following ways: curriculum development; coordinating instructional design and evaluation; preparing manuscripts; organizing measurement, feedback, and tailored coaching for healthcare professionals; promoting educational opportunities to potential participants; supervising student assistants; and dedicating time and expertise to grant- and contract-funded projects. This position may require occasional travel and attendance at evening/weekend events.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a doctorate in Health Communication or related field (ABD will be considered); expertise in patient-provider interaction; demonstrated teaching excellence at the university level; training in quantitative social scientific methods, including experimental design; a track record of research; an interest in training and development; and a commitment to interdisciplinary work. Applicants must be qualified to work in the United States and have a strong command of written and spoken English.

Salary

Salary and benefits are consistent with The University of Texas at Austin guidelines and commensurate with the applicant’s professional credentials. Period of Appointment: This is expected to be a 12-month appointment, renewable on an annual basis for 3 years.
