Undergraduate Learning Assistants (ULA) in training for Fall 2022

Center for Advancing Teaching Excellence: CATE Welcomes New ULAs this Fall

Published Fall 2022

The Center for Advancing Teaching Excellence (CATE) welcomed 31 Undergraduate Learning Assistants (ULAs) this fall. The ULA program partners a faculty member with a student who has completed their class to work 10 hours a week assisting with instructional duties, such as office hours, research for class, testing new assignments, and mentoring students to be successful in the course.

Larissa Aguilar served as a ULA for two semesters and now works as our ULA Coordinator.  She says the program helped her learn how to communicate effectively with students and gain confidence. “The best way to learn is to teach and being a ULA has given me the opportunity to grow my own knowledge in the subject matter of my course through explaining topics to students,” explains Aguilar.

She believes student’s insights help faculty better know their audience. “ULA’s offer a different point of view for approaching assignments and tasks that can help make a course more effective for everyone!”

Timeline for the Spring 2023 ULA Program
