Honors Day

2021 Ceremony Information

In keeping with the University's continued restriction on large in-person events to safeguard public health, the Moody College will not be hosting an Honors Day ceremony in 2021. To honor our Moody College Scholars and Distinguished Scholars whom we take so much pride in, we will be preparing a mailing of digital certificates. More details about this will be coming soon, and we will make our Honors Day medals available for distribution as soon as it is deemed safe to do so by University officials. Honors Day-eligible students will also be receiving from the University either a cord or medal plus a certificate in the mail to recognize their achievements, and they will be invited to attend a virtual program on April 10th hosted by President Hartzell.

2020 Ceremony Information

We are honored and proud that so many of our students have once again been recognized as College and Distinguished Scholars due to their outstanding academic achievement at The University of Texas at Austin. While we would normally wish to welcome our scholars and their families to our annual Moody College Honors Day Convocation, we regret that we are unable to host this event this year due to UT’s cancellation of all large in-person events, in response to public health concerns regarding limiting the spread of COVID-19.

Our top priority is safeguarding the health and well-being of our students and those in our community, so while we cannot celebrate your achievements in person, we will make our Honors Day medals available for distribution as soon as it is deemed safe to do so by University officials. In the mean, Honors Day-eligible students should have received either a cord or medal, plus a certificate, from the University in the mail to recognize your achievements. We will be in touch with our students directly once we have concrete information available about distribution of medals from Moody College.

Honors Day FAQs:

I am a double major in the Moody College of Communication and the College of Liberal Arts.  I meet the requirements for the Moody College of Communication, why didn’t I receive an invitation?

This is a university honor (not a college honor), therefore, double majors enrolled in two schools/colleges must meet the GPA requirements for both schools/colleges in order to receive an Honors Day designation.  In this example, the student did not meet the GPA requirement to qualify for the top 20% for the College of Liberal Arts, so the student did not qualify for an Honors Day designation even though he/she met the Moody College of Communication criteria.

I am a double major in the Moody College of Communication and the College of Liberal Arts.  I meet the requirements for the College of Communication as a Distinguished Scholar, why am I designated as a College Scholar?

This is a university honor (not a college honor), therefore, double majors enrolled in two schools/colleges must meet the GPA requirements for both schools/colleges in order to receive an Honors Day designation.  If a student qualifies as a Distinguished Scholar for the Moody College of Communication and qualifies as a College Scholar for the College of Liberal Arts, the student would qualify as a College Scholar for The University and be recognized as such at both college ceremonies.

I qualified for Honors Day recognition last year, but I’m not on the Honors Day list for this year.  What happened?

Eligibility is based on class rank instead of a set GPA minimum. Class rank is recalculated by the Office of the Registrar each year and the GPA requirement can change from year to year. Moody College of Communication top 20% class rank GPA for 2021 eligibility was calculated as 3.8214 in-residence UT GPA for seniors and 3.8961 in-residence UT GPA for juniors.

I thought I qualified for Honors Day recognition, but I’m not on the Honors Day list. What can I do?

Review the Honors Day criteria (see link above) to confirm your eligibility. If you still believe you are eligible, you should see your assigned Moody College of Communication advisor who can check your Honors Day status against the criteria and explain or assist as necessary.

I’m getting a grade change which should improve my GPA.  Can I be considered for Honors Day?

No. Designation as a College Scholar or a Distinguished College Scholar will be based on eligibility calculations by the Office of the Registrar, as of 5 p.m. on the 20th class day of the semester in which the Honors Day Ceremony is held.  No changes will be made to eligibility beyond the 20th class day.

Does this mean that I am graduating with honors?

Graduating with honors is a separate honors designation from Honors Day recognition. Qualifying for Honors Day does not necessarily mean that you will graduate with honors. Please see this link for more information regarding graduating with honors: http://moody.utexas.edu/students/graduation-information. If you will be recognized for graduating with honors, cords for this recognition are distributed at the graduation ceremony.
