How are you using the skills that you learned at Moody in your current position?

I use the knowledge I gained in classes and interpersonal skills I honed through clinic everyday as I see patients.

Why did you pursue a career in speech, language, and hearing sciences?

I chose to pursue a career in audiology as it is the perfect blend of health sciences and interpersonal relations. I truly cherish being able to build relationships with my patients and help them with their hearing and balance difficulties.

Were you in any student orgs?

UT Austin Student Academy of Audiology (SAA), former treasurer and president

How was your degree helpful to your career?

My degree is helpful in my career as it was specialized training in how to be an audiologist and how the various parts of the ear function to allow for hearing and balance.

To the audiology students, my advice is to get to know your professors in a professional and personal manner. They will continue to be one of your greatest resources and cheerleaders throughout the beginning of your career.

What have you learned so far working in the field?

I have learned the importance of “small talk” and getting to know the people I work with as patients. It is extremely important for people to feel heard, specifically when they are making important decisions about how to proceed with hearing loss or balance issues.

What advice do you have for #TEXASMoody students?

To the audiology students, my advice is to get to know your professors in a professional and personal manner. They will continue to be one of your greatest resources and cheerleaders throughout the beginning of your career.

What do you miss most about Moody College?

I miss walking through the halls and running into professors or dropping in on their office hours just to chat!

Can you talk about your career path?

After completing my graduate degree at UT, I moved to Jacksonville, Florida to complete an externship year (similar to a residency) with the Mayo Clinic of Florida. Since then, I have decided to stay in Jacksonville and accepted a position as an audiologist at the Jacksonville Hearing & Balance Institute where I will be completing audiologic evaluations, providing hearing aid services, and evaluating and treating vestibular lesions.

What classes/professors helped the most?

All of my classes were helpful as my graduate degree was so highly specialized. However, Kelsey Hatton, Au.D., and Sangeeta Kamdar, Au.D. both helped me gain confidence in my clinical competence and encouraged me to always work to be better.

Do you have a favorite project you worked on at your job?

In my externship, I completed a research project which investigated the amount of volume control is allowed by multiple hearing aid manufacturers. This was important information to highlight as each manufacturer has a different range which audiologists need to know about so that they can help choose the best hearing aid for their patients.
