How are you using the skills that you learned at Moody in your current role?

At Moody, I learned through clinical experience and the classroom setting how to serve patients with empathy, honor cultural and linguistic diversity, and keep patient and family values at the center of my practice.

Why are you passionate about working children?

I am passionate about working with children with communication disabilities and children who are d/Deaf and hard of hearing because I believe in setting high expectations for what children CAN do and creating a plan with families for how we will reach these goals together.

Why are you passionate about SLHS?

I'm passionate about SLHS because every day I wake up and know that the work I am doing is empowering children to find their voice and guiding families to advocate for a place to always be made at the table for children with disabilities.

Were you involved in student orgs on campus?

I spent a semester as a clinician in the Lang Stuttering Institute and loved every minute that I was there! I was a teaching assistant for one of the GREATEST professors, Dr. Czimskey.

What advice do you have for #TEXASMoody students?

My advice for #TEXASMoody students is BE OPEN! Be open to changing your mind, be open to meeting people with different backgrounds from you and accepting there are always multiple points of view, be open to growth and challenge. I was at UT for a semester and a half before COVID lockdowns began. The only way I made it through online classes/clinical rotations was making connections with professors and classmates who could relate to exactly how we felt through the most uncertain time in my life. We all supported one another through job interviews and building our resumes, taking the PRAXIS exam, and now we have reunion trips because we have grown so close over time.

What do you miss most about Moody College?

I miss the constant opportunities to get involved with research either through working as a research assistant or attending lectures to listen to ongoing developments in the field of speech, language pathology and audiology.

Can you talk about your career path?

Upon graduating, I started my career working for a public school. I transitioned settings and now I work as a pediatric medical SLP for Cook Children's. My work is a combination of treating children and coaching/counseling  parents as they navigate supporting their child in building communication skills. I love what I do and I feel blessed with the opportunity to work as a partner with families on their child's communication journey!!!

What classes/professors helped the most?

Dr. Franco made a profound impact on who I am as an SLP now. She trained me through parent coaching as a research assistant in Project SKILLS working with families whose children were diagnosed with Autism.
