How are you using the skills that you learned at Moody at your current role?

Moody taught me the importance of teamwork and effective communication, both of which are skills I use every day in my role. Much of my work involves interacting with colleagues on different teams, so understanding how to work with a team mindset is extremely important. Similarly, succinct, and effective communication is vital, especially when people’s time is limited. I continue to refine my ability to effectively communicate while ensuring I’m direct to the point and intentional with what I’m trying to convey.

How are you enjoying your role?

What I love most about my role is that I am empowered to work on a wide variety of projects for my company, a global financial services group. As a member of Macquarie’s Corporate Affairs team, my role focuses on sharing the story of how Macquarie is empowering people to innovate and invest for a better future through media relations and external communications across the Americas region (U.S., Canada, and Latin America). This encompasses coordinating media interviews between reporters and Macquarie executives, working on strategic messaging for Macquarie’s businesses and helping to elevate and protect the Macquarie brand.

At the same time, my work often has crossover with social media, internal communications, marketing and government affairs, enabling me to collaborate with a range of colleagues across Macquarie and lend a hand on various tasks including drafting social media posts, helping to coordinate video shoots, and supporting internal communications.  I also love that as a global organization, Macquarie provides the opportunity to interact with colleagues around the world. On a weekly basis, I engage with counterparts in locations including London, Sydney and Singapore.

Do you have any favorite projects?

It’s hard to name just one, so here’s two! Last year I was proud to work closely on planning a media event that featured our CEO sharing her views and experiences of women in finance. I also led the communications for Macquarie’s long-standing charity fundraising event hosted in Calgary. Attending the fundraiser was a rewarding experience as I saw first-hand the importance and impact the fundraising event had for the Calgary community.

Why did you study Communication Studies?

I always knew that I wanted to work in the communications field in New York City, but the path to studying CMS was not always clear for me. I started at Moody as a Public Relations major and switched to Journalism before ultimately landing at CMS. While PR and Journalism courses both provided excellent background for my current role, studying CMS was the best fit because it was broad enough to offer so many options but still narrow enough to keep me within the communications industry. The courses CMS offered focused on the fundamentals of communications, which were important for me to grasp as I pursued a career in the industry.

Were you in any student orgs?

Communication Council, The Daily Texan, Texas Student Television, Moody College Dean's Ambassador

How was your degree helpful to your career?

My degree helped equip me with the foundation to build a career working in communications. My classes and extracurricular activities at Moody helped me develop a strong work ethic.

What have you learned so far working in the field?

I have learned that there’s no such thing as a typical 9-5 job — this is especially true working in a role that interacts with the media. My role involves coordinating media interviews and broadcast appearances for company spokespeople, and working with reporters and producers in the US and globally.  I monitor market activity and work to identify areas to insert Macquarie’s insights and perspectives into media conversations. While no day is the same, I have found that my unique set of responsibilities afford me added flexibility to work in a hybrid role where I can balance work and life.

What advice do you have for #TEXASMoody students?

Seek out internships throughout your time in college. Internships provide the opportunity for real-world learning and are the best way to envision what your career may look like. Internships also expand your network and allow you to connect with professionals in your field.

What do you miss most about Moody College?

The people and campus energy -— I always loved running into friends and classmates while walking to class or just strolling through campus. Walking the streets of NYC is great, but very different.

Can you talk about your career path?

I graduated UT in May 2021 having already accepted a role in healthcare communications, based in New York. After a few months of working remotely through the Covid-19 pandemic, I made the move to New York City in August 2021 to work in a hybrid-working environment. I loved the people I worked with but found myself seeking a more dynamic role. After just under a year of experience under my belt, I made the decision to begin searching for other opportunities in New York, and I ultimately found Macquarie. The decision has worked out great for me, as I love the work I’m doing and have learned so much since joining the firm in May 2022. So far, my job has taken me to Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Calgary, and I have been exposed to people at all levels within Macquarie.
