Shiv Ganesh (PhD, Purdue University, 2000), is Professor of Communication in the Department of Communication Studies, Moody College of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin. Prof. Ganesh studies communication and collective organizing in the context of globalization and digital technologies. His work spans critical-institutional and poststructural approaches to communication, and in the last two decades has focused on technological transformations in collective action, activism, dialogue, conflict, sustainability, and transparency. His research is ethnographic and largely qualitative but has incorporated quantitative elements, and he has done fieldwork in a number of countries, including India, Aoteaora New Zealand, the United States, and Sweden.
Recent projects include a study of environmental reporting dynamics in the United Nations Global Compact Network, and an investigation of sustainability and transparency dynamics in global cotton supply chains, both funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research (Mistra). He was also a co-principal investigator in a Swedish Research Council grant on advocacy and voice amongst indigenous people displaced by the creation of environmental reserves in India, and the principal investigator on a large-scale survey of digital interaction and engagement dynamics amongst global networks of activists, funded by the Royal Society of New Zealand’s Marsden Foundation. His first large funded project in 2007 on global social justice activism also came from the Marsden Foundation’s Fast Start program.
Shiv’s writing has appeared in a number of journals including Communication Monographs, Communication Theory, Human Relations, International Journal of Communication, Journal of Applied Communication Research, Journal of Business Research, Management Communication Quarterly, History of Media Studies, Media, Culture & Society, New Media & Society, and Organization Studies. He is a former editor-in-chief of the National Communication Association’s Journal of International and Intercultural Communication, and is on the editorial board of several other journals, including Communication Monographs, Information, Communication & Society, Journal of Applied Communication Research, Management Communication Quarterly, Organization, and Women’s Studies in Communication. His research has won several awards from both the International Communication Association and the National Communication Association. Shiv came to the Moody College in January 2019, from Massey University in New Zealand, where he served as a Professor of Communication and Head of the School of Communication, journalism and marketing.
In recent years, Shiv has also been active on global engagement issues, serving as the Moody College’s Chair of Global Engagement from 2019 to 2023, and serving as the Chair of Membership and Internationalization at the International Communication Association from 2019 to 2023. In 2021, he was elected as Fellow of the International Communication Association.
