As the School of Journalism continues its yearlong centennial celebration, it will be honoring the many accomplishments of its alumni.

Among its many prominent graduates, the Moody College claims two of Austin’s best-known broadcast journalists – Judy Maggio (B.J. ’81) and Ron Oliveira (B.S. ’76), who co-anchored Austin newscasts for decades and have a combined 68 years of reporting experience.

The pair led Austin’s top-rated news broadcasts and has interviewed presidents, royalty, governors, civil rights leaders and even other Moody College alumni such as Lady Bird Johnson and Walter Cronkite.

The duo advises journalism students to read from a variety of reputable sources, experiment with internships, prepare to work long hours, have realistic expectations at the start of their careers and keep true to journalistic values.

Oliveira left broadcast news and started his own public relations firm in 2013. Maggio retired in May 2014, vacating her post to fellow Journalism alumna Hema Mullur (B.J. ’06).

A full overview of the centennial covering events, programs, alumni and a history of the school can be found on the centennial website.
