ISOJ and the Moody College Writing Support Program celebrate anniversaries in 2024
International Symposium on Online Journalism celebrates 25 years
This year, Moody College of Communication’s Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas hosted its 25th International Symposium on Online Journalism. Founded in 1999 by Moody College journalism professor Rosental Alves, ISOJ has been at the leading edge of the intersection of journalism and digital technologies, anticipating trends and shaping the future of online journalism. Every year, it convenes hundreds of industry leaders, journalists and scholars worldwide, both online and in person. This year’s conference welcomed participants from 74 countries, including 400 people in person and 500 people online. The conference focused on timely topics such as the effects of generative AI on journalism, the importance of supporting local news, and what reporters can learn from content creators and virtual influencers. Building a legacy, one story at a time
The Moody College Writing Support Program was founded 10 years ago and in that time has helped thousands of students become better writers — from journalism students to advertising, radio-television-film and public relations majors. Student peer coaches provide writing and editing support and also help with concept and ideation. "I'm grateful for all the student coaches we've had who have put a lot of heart into really trying to help the students in the best way possible,” said Diana Dawson, journalism assistant professor of instruction and founder of the Writing Support Program. “They care about the work they do, and they're the reason we've stayed strong and we've grown. It's not me at all. It's all the coaches who've put in hour after hour."
