Gain skills such as writing clearly and succinctly; telling stories in multiple formats, thinking critically about issues that affect both media and society; communicating through social media platforms; and understanding how journalism influences the way individuals and groups are perceived.

About the Minor

The Journalism and Media minor is open to all undergraduate students except Journalism majors who have completed J 301F. 

If demand exceeds space available, the department reserves the right to select applicants based additional factors such as GPA and success in J 301F.

The Journalism and Media minor has a different name, grade requirement for J 301F and minimum GPA for catalogs prior to 2020-2022 catalog. Be mindful of these differences when viewing the minor requirements and completing the minor application.

 

2020-2022 Catalog and Beyond

The Journalism and Media minor is open to all undergraduate students except Journalism majors who have completed J 301F with a C- or better. 

  • The Journalism minor requires a total of 15 hours of coursework.
  • 6 hours of coursework must be taken at upper division level.
  • 12 hours of coursework must be taken in residence and for a letter grade.
  • A C- or better is required for J 301F, and 302F or J 313P
  • Admission to the minor does not guarantee a seat in J courses. Major restrictions and prerequisites apply.

The Journalism minor is open to all undergraduate students EXCEPT Journalism majors following the eligible catalogs. The minor application criteria requires completion of J 301F with a B- or better and an overall GPA of 2.75 at UT Austin.

The Journalism and Media minor to all undergraduate students EXCEPT Journalism majors following the eligible catalogs. The minor application criteria requires completion of J 301F with a C- or better. Applicants on the 2020-2022 catalog also need an overall GPA of 2.75 at UT Austin. The later catalogs do not have a GPA requirement.

Students enrolled in their first semester at UT Austin should apply after grades are posted.

A student's major college may have additional criteria that they must meet in order to pursue a minor. Prior to applying, students are encouraged to meet with an academic advisor in their own major to discuss how the minor fits into their degree plan.
