Leaving UT

Withdraw, Cancel Registration or Take a Break from UT

If you have not registered for a semester and do not plan on attending UT for that semester (or longer) see these instructions for taking a semester (or more) off from UT.

If you have registered for courses, but you have decided not to attend, and it is before the first class day, see these instructions for cancelling your registration.

If classes have already begun and you need to drop all of your courses or your last course, see these instructions for withdrawing from the University.

Taking a Semester (or more) Off from UT

If you decide to take a break from attending classes at the University and make this decision before you register, you notify the University of your decision by not registering for classes. You can elect to return to the University in a subsequent semester. Should you decide to return, you will need to follow the directions for returning students.

Cancelling your Registration

If you decide not to attend classes at the University for a semester in which you have already registered, you will need to cancel your registration. If you make this decision before you have completed your registration, you may cancel your registration online either by dropping all of your courses during a registration period, or, if your tuition fee bill has already been created, by following the directions on the Cancel My Registration webpage. This removes all of your classes from your record and clears your tuition bill. If you decide to start taking classes again, you will need to follow the directions for returning students.

If you decide not to attend classes at the University after you have completed your registration, you will need to submit a General Request/Petition form. In your request, please state that you would like to cancel your registration, and indicate the semester to which this applies, along with a brief explanation of why you are making this request.

Withdrawing from the University

If you want to withdraw from the University (for any reason) before the mid-semester deadline (or anytime during the summer), you must meet with your academic advisor. Your advisor will make an electronic note of your withdrawal and provide you the necessary form. If you do this before the 20th class day (7th class day in the summer), you will be refunded a portion of your tuition.

If you are on scholastic probation and withdraw from the University after the first four weeks of classes, you may be subject to academic dismissal. If you plan on returning to the University next semester, you may register for classes at the same time as all of the other currently enrolled students and do not need to apply for readmission. If you plan on returning to the University some time after next semester, you will need to follow the directions for returning students.
