Samuel L. Moore, Ph.D. is the Moody Associate Director for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and External Engagement Strategies. He received a B.F.A in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, M.Ed. in Instructional Design from The University of Texas at Austin, and Ph.D. in Communication, Technology, and Policy at The University of Texas at Austin. He is a three-decade practitioner of infusing communication skills in the training of diverse future researchers, scholars and creatives, especially in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). His teaching topics have included minorities in the media, internet access, and public speaking for STEM majors.
He has held professional staff and teaching appointments at the University of California Davis, State University of New York Stony Brook, The University of Texas at Austin, University of Illinois Urbana, Northwestern University, and the University of Minnesota. His professional appointments in higher education includes director of STEM DEI talent development programs at Minnesota and Texas, assistant dean for external engagement and DEI in the Graduate School at the University of Minnesota, and associate dean for undergraduate programs and advising in the School of Communication at Northwestern University.
He created and taught a project-based public speaking class for engineering majors at Northwestern and has developed a Moody class on strategic communication of Geohealth for social good to address climate extremes related to health inequities. His appointments involved external engagement with K-12 systems, corporations, national laboratories, community organizations, and government agencies. The appointments included the infusion of science communication training for undergraduate researchers and graduate students and the communication of career options in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) to women and minorities.
