Substance Misuse

Towards Solving the Problems of Substance Misuse and Addiction Among Youth and Emerging Adults

By Mike Mackert

The CHC is excited to be part of one of the Pop-Up Institutes selected for funding in 2017-18 by the office of the University of Texas at Austin Vice President for Research. The Pop-Up Institute, “Towards Solving the Problem of Substance Misuse and Addiction among Youth and Emerging Adults,” is led by Dr. Lori Holleran Steiker (School of Social Work).

This Pop-Up Institute is a chance for the CHC to be involved in a campus-wide effort focused on youth substance misuse. Partners across campus come from the School of Social Work, Dell Medical School, School of Pharmacy, Undergraduate Studies, University Health Services, and the Counseling and Mental Center.

Youth substance misuse is a complex issue affected by factors ranging from genetics to peer social influence to the environment. The Pop-Up Institute will launch a diverse network of UT scholars and partners in the community to advance research and practice in multiple settings regarding youth substance misuse and addiction.

We will share more on this exciting initiative in the coming months.
