IE MENTORS WORK WITH LOCAL AREA STUDENTS: IT COULD BE U 2011

In January 2011, The University of Texas at Austin Intellectual Entrepreneurship (IE) Consortium launched a partnership with the Media Communications Council (MCC) to provide intensive mentoring and college readiness services for middle and high school age students throughout Austin. The goal of this initiative is to help students develop Engagement, Education, Employment & Entrepreneurship. Put simply, the objective is to empower students to discover their passon and produce a portfolio-and using this to construct a pathway to college. Partial support for this project was provided by grant from the Austin Housing Authority.
For three weeks during the summer of 2011, many of these local area students participated in an intensive "It Could Be U/IE Mentoring and College Readiness Camp." Mirroring the structure of IE, “It Could Be U” is divided into three phases: Discovery, Ownership and Accountability. Students were placed into several vertical groups, including: STEM, Arts/Media, and Business/Entrepreneurship. IE Mentors (graduate and undergraduate students from UT’s IE program) worked with students in these groups. The summer camp culminated with videos and presentations from each of the three groups:
IT COULD BE U CAMP SUMMARY:
(1) The Media Arts group presented a very moving film about the importance of recycling; the film was directed, written and performed by the students. In addition to a longer documentary, the students and their IE Mentors produced two short public service announcements (view videos below).
(2) The Business group presented their non-profit charity company and explained their business model. They also produced a commercial (view video below).
(3) The STEM group made a power point presentation, showing their solar powered model home, and demoing an experiment. They also screened their secret project: the “Science Rangers” movie (view video below).
